In January 1986, sponsored Islamic fundamentalists orchestrated massive communal riots to push non-Muslim “infidels” out of Kashmir to create the Nizam-e-Mustafa (Muslim paradise). They burnt down nearly 300 homes of minority Hindus and two Hindu temples. State government, being run by the majority ( Muslims), covered it up. Muslims started unofficially renaming historically named cities to Islamic names like Anantnag ( which is a historical name since 100 BC) to Islamabad.
Hindus in kashmir thought it won’t get worst, they rebuilt their homes. Some of them purchased land in Hindu majority Jammu region as safety measure just incase….
After 1986 strengthening of the hardline Islamist extremist within the Muslims put the Kashmiri Hindus in an alarmingly difficult position.To further terrorize Kashmiri Hindus, Organizations like JKLF, Harkatal-Mujahideen and other Islamic fundamentalists issued hit lists.
On September 14, 1989, prominent Hindu social worker was killed. In the period of 1989 to October 1990 hundreds of kashmiri Hindus were killed, raped and tortured. The events of 19 January 1990 were particularly barbarous. On that day, mosques issued statements that the Kashmiri Pandits were Kafirs and that the males had to convert to Islam or leave Kashmir or be killed. Those who chose to leave were told to leave their women behind so that they could be used as sex slaves. This led to mass migration of Hindus from kashmir in 1990.
Those who stayed back were not spared.
On 21th March 1997, 7 Hindus were killed in Sangrampora.
On 15th June 1997, 3 Hindus were killed in Gool.
On 26th January 1998, 23 Hindus were killed in Wandhama.
On 5th February 2000, 3 Hindus were killed in Telwani.
On 4th March 2000, 1 Hindu was killed in Brariangan.
On 6th March 2000, 1 Hindu was killed in Pethibug.
On 23rd March 2003, 24 Hindus were killed in Nadimarg.
People like Yasin Malik,Javaid Mir,Bitta Karate and others responsible for provoking and killing Hindus have not been punished for lack of will and vote bank politics. There are only approximately 3000 Hindus left in kashmir who unfortunately dance to tunes of extremists.
